Gaddley doesn't seem to be a real place in the United Kingdom, but it was here that a Muggle family of five was found dead in 1998, killed by Death Eaters for reasons unknown, if there was any reason for it at all. Harry, Ron, and Hermione learn about this atrocity from Potterwatch in DH22.

Located in the woods just outside Little Hangleton, the Gaunt House was home to Marvolo Gaunt and his two children, Morfin and Merope. The last remaining descendants of Salazar Slytherin, they lived there in poverty, speaking Parseltongue to each other and living in deplorable conditions (HBP10).

Eventually, after the Gaunts had all died and the house was left deserted, Voldemort concealed one of his Horcruxes - Marvolo's ring - in the ruins of the house. It remained until Dumbledore returned to the site, recovered the Horcrux, and destroyed it (HBP23).

Though Voldemort did not return to the house for many years, he did fly back once more when he discovered that Harry had stolen another of his Horcruxes. He soon discovered that the ring was gone and quickly took off in search of the others. Harry saw this happen through Voldemort's eyes, prompting him to hurry his search for the final Horcrux, at Hogwarts (DH29).

Germany has a history in wizarding games; the game of Stichstock was invented there around 1105, though it died out two centuries later (QA2), and there is also a German illuminated manuscript from c. 962 A.D. showing three warlocks dismounting their broomsticks in pain (QA1).

The Bowtruckle is native to Germany, as are the Erkling and the werewolf, and we know there is a German Ministry of Magic because they are the ones charged with controlling the deadly creatures (FB).

According to the Sorting Hat's song in GF12, 'glen' is where Rowena Ravenclaw hails from. "Glen" is a Scottish term for "valley", so she is most likely from Scotland - and thus perhaps the one of the four founders who lived closest to Hogwarts' present location.

Godric's Hollow is a fictional town in the West Country, where Voldemort attacked the Potter family, killing Lily and James and attempting to kill one-year-old Harry, a failed attack which quickly brought about his demise (more...)

A small town in Lithuania, northeast of Poland, Gorodok is home to the Gorodok Gargoyles (QA8).

Gorsemoor does not appear to be a real town, at least any more, though there is a Gorsemoor Primary School in Staffordshire. At any rate in 1556, Gorsemoor was the birthplace of Gunhilda of Gorsemoor, who went on to become a beloved Healer and develop the cure for Dragon Pox (fw).

The house that Hermione grew up in was apparently still owned by her parents even after they moved to Australia, for it was one of the places Hermione considered going for refuge when on the run from Death Eaters in Tottenham Court Road (DH9). Aside from this brief mention, we hear virtually nothing about the house where Hermione grew up and occasionally spent her holidays.

After Voldemort killed his father and paternal grandparents, they were buried in the graveyard by the church in Little Hangleton (GF1). This, then, is also where Harry was taken by Portkey, saw Cedric Diggory killed and Voldemort reborn, and duelled Voldemort in 1995 (GF34).

The word 'graveyard' is used interchangably with 'churchyard' to refer to the same place.

Great Hangleton, neighbor to Little Hangleton, is found about two hundred miles from Little Whinging (which places it somewhere in Yorkshire, most likely, especially given the "Little" and "Great" appellations). Great Hangleton is approximately six miles (HBP10) from Little Hangleton and also contains a "dark and dingy" police station that serves both towns (GF1).

Greece is as steeped in history in the wizarding world as it is in the Muggle world. In fact, when Albus Dumbledore and Elphias Doge planned to take a Grand Tour of the world upon graduating Hogwarts, Greece was to be their first stop (DH18). This is understandable, as the country was historically home to the sirens and the cyclops, it was the country where the basilisk was first created (FB), and it was the home of Circe (fw3).

Greece is also the natural home of several other magical creatures, one of which - the chimaera - killed Dai Llewellyn while he was on holiday in Mykonos, Greece (FB), and many years later, also led to a narrow escape for Elphias Doge (DH1).

Quirrell also pretended to be Greek when he gave Hagrid a dragon's egg in the Hog's Head (PS16).

The Green Dragon is an inn located five miles from the home of Janus Thickey, a wizard who pretended he had been killed by a lethifold but was later found to be living with the landlady of the Green Dragon (FB).

An island country found off the eastern coast of Canada, Greenland, despite its name, is about 80% covered in ice. Bill Weasley jokingly asked Harry in OP5 if, on his trip from Privet Drive to Grimmauld Place, Mad-Eye Moody made them come via Greenland. [Photo courtesy www.tomaatnet.nl/~wesker/photo.html]

Located on a street where the houses have high, timbered gables and look "like gingerbread houses," this was the house where the wand-maker Gregorovitch once lived. Voldemort comes to this house searching for information about the Elder Wand to find Gregorovitch gone; the woman who answers the door instead claims that Gregorovitch has moved, just before Voldemort kills her and her young children. It seems she was telling the truth, as it takes Voldemort some time after this to track Gregorovitch down, and given the wand-maker's age it seems unlikely that he would have such young children (DH12).

This workshop, where Gregorovitch most likely made all of his wands, was the scene of a terrible moment for him. In the middle of the night over fifty years ago, Gregorovitch must have received some indication that an intruder was in his workshop; at any rate, he grabbed a lantern and ran to the shop just in time to see Gellert Grindelwald jump out the window, making off with the prized Elder Wand.

Gregorovitch never learned who the thief was, but he was forced to relive this memory many years later after being tracked down by Voldemort, in search of the Elder Wand himself. Once Voldemort saw the memory and discovered that Gregorovitch neither had the Elder Wand nor knew the name of the wizard who had stolen it, he killed the wand-maker and moved on to tracking down the thief - Grindelwald - instead (DH14).

"The grimy fronts of the surrounding houses were not welcoming; some of them had broken windows, glimmering dully in the light from the streetlamps, paint was peeling from many of the doors, and heaps of rubbish lay outside several sets of front steps...." (OP3)

Grimmauld Place is a Muggle street in London on which number twelve, Grimmauld Place is found (OP3). Since number twelve is hidden from Muggle eyes, the residents of the street have "long since accepted the amusing mistake in the numbering that had caused number eleven to sit beside number thirteen" (DH12).

We know the street is within about a mile of King's Cross Station (OP10) and of St. Mungo's Hospital (OP23), but can determine little more information than that.

Grimmauld Square is a "small and shabby" "square of unkempt grass," surrounded by "tall, dilapidated houses" (DH9, DH12), which include number twelve, Grimmauld Place. It is in this square that Death Eaters are stationed as lookouts while Harry, Ron, Hermione hide from them inside the house (DH11. We know the square's name from when Harry, Ron, Hermione, and their guard from the Order of the Phoenix rode the Knight Bus back to Hogwarts following winter holiday in OP24, the bus "rumbled around Grimmauld Square, weaving on and off the pavement," before shooting off to Birmingham.

The Grodzisk Goblins Quidditch team call this Polish county home. Josef Wronski - the Seeker who created the Wronski feint - played for this team (QA8).

Located "in town" from Privet Drive (perhaps in Little Whinging?) in a building that has at least nine floors, Grunnings is the place where Vernon Dursley works with his desk facing away from the window. The town can't be too large, though, because despite the height of the building and its proximity to a bakery across the street, Grunnings still has its own parking lot next to the building (PS2).
