Tolkien, J. R. R.
Rowling first read Tolkien's classic The Lord of the Rings
sometime during her days at the University of Exeter.
Her biographer, Sean Smith, believes Tolkien's work must surely have influenced
Rowling and her writing more than she admits. In interviews with people
who remember her in Porto,
she was said to be rarely without her battered copy of
The Lord of the Rings, which she re-read frequently

Toronto

summer of 2000. She was terrified before she went on stage, but once she got

The Hogwarts Express figures prominently in each of the Harry Potter novels, as Harry and his friends journey to Hogwarts each September 1st for the new term and return for summer holidays at the end of June each summer. "Trains have been quite important in my life. My parents met on a train." ("Happy Ending, and that's for beginners" by Anne Johnstone, The Herald, 24 June 1997). In addition, of course, JKR recalls that Harry strolled fully-formed into her head whilst she was sitting on a delayed train from Manchester to London in 1990.
For me, King's Cross is a very, very romantic place. Probably the most romantic station purely because my parents met here. So that's always been part of my childhood folklore. My dad had just joined the navy; my mum had just joined the Wrens. They were both traveling up to Arbroath in Scotland from London and they met on the train pulling out of King's Cross. So I wanted Harry to go to Hogwarts by train. I just love trains; I'm a bit nerdy like that, and obviously therefore it had to be King's Cross (HPM).
Troy
'Troy', one of JKR's oldest friends, is "a passionate supporter of
the West Ham Football Club. It is in her honour that the only soccer
team ever mentioned in the books is West Ham." The Irish Chaser
Troy is named for her

Tufnell Park
Neighborhood in northern London where JKR's maternal grandparents,
Stan and
Frieda Volant, resided.
Peter Rowling and
Anne Volant were married at
All Saints Parish Church of Dalmeny and Tytherton Road in Tufnell Park on
14 March 1965.
Available biographical information does not indicate whether
the Volants lived there until their deaths or moved elsewhere
(SS_JKRB).
Tutshill
The Rowling family moved to this
small village across the Severn River from Bristol in 1974. Rowling spent
the remainder of her childhood at Church Cottage in Tutshill. Tutshill
is in Gloucestershire, right at the border between England and Wales
(Chepstow,
a short mile downhill from Tutshill, is in the Gwent county of Wales).
Tutshill is situated right at the edge of the legend-filled Forest of Dean
and between the confluence of the Rivers
Wye and Severn
(SS_JKRB). In an
interview, Rowling affirmed that
Hagrid's accent is
West Country,
based on her childhood experiences in this area of England. See
