Wimbourne Minster
Wimbourne Minster is a village in southern
Dorset near the
village of West Mors, where Rowling's paternal grandparents,
Ernie and
Kathleen Rowling, had a
grocery store business called Glenwood Stores in Station Road for many
years. West Mors and Wimbourne Minster are both in the vicinity of
Bournemouth, a sizeable coastal
Dorset town
just northwest of the Isle of Wight.
Winterbourne
The Rowling family moved to 35 Nicholls Lane in this village to the northeast
of Bristol sometime in 1970 and lived
here until 1974. Rowling first attended school in the Winterbourne primary
school. The Potters were neighbors to the Rowling family in this village
in the early 1970s. The village derived its name from Bradley Brook, a
brook that used to burn or dry up in the wintertime. After Henry III's
"Disafforestation Act" in 1228, the native forests were cleared
and agriculture became the main-stay of the village economy (wheat,
flax and barley in particular). Stone quarrying and coal mining were
also carried out in this vicinity. See

Wye River
The Wye River forms the border between
Wales and
England
near where it flows into the Severn River. This part of the border also
separates Chepstow from
Tutshill, where Rowling lived for some
years starting in 1974. In the 1600s, according to a
Famous Wizard card, a
troll terrorized travellers
crossing the Wye River; the
troll was eventually
defeated by Almerick Sawbridge
(fw41). While Rowling does
not give the exact location of this
troll-infested crossing,
she might very well be thinking of the stretch of river near where she grew
up.
